Vernon Lee Groves, age 80, of Winchester, Virginia, died Friday, March 19, 2004, in the Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Groves was born on July 11, 1923, in Portland, TN, the son of the late Claude and Lillian Groves. He retired as a tool and die maker for General Motors Corporation in Mansfield, Ohio. He had previously worked as a brakeman for Penn Central Railroad. He attended Calvary Church of the Brethren. He was a U.S. Army Airforce Veteran of World War II.
Mr. Groves married Hattie Mills Groves on June 14, 1958, in Bucyrus, OH.
Surviving with his wife are five children, Gary Groves of Bucyrus, OH, Greg Groves of Winchester, VA, Mark Burke of Columbus, OH, Brenda Rinehart of Goshen, IN, and Vicki Pierce of Galion, OH; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; three sisters, Latella Brewington of Kalamazoo, MI, Rebecca Good of Leesburg, FL, and Dorothy Emerson of Bucyrus, OH, and a half brother, Harold Groves of Williard, OH. Three brothers, Claude Groves, Jr., Charles Groves, and J.M. Groves preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Pastor Clarence Davis, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Panorama Memorial Park with military honors by VFW post 2123.
Pallbearers will be Gary Groves, Greg Groves, Mark Burke, Keith Pierce, Mike Jordan, and Jesse Groves.
Military Honors will be provided by VFW Post 2123.
The family will receive friends at South Chapel on Monday evening from 7:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M.
