I only knew Vernon for a few days last year when he stayed with me in Swindon on his way to Europe with his brother Don. Even in those few days I felt I knew him well. He was very knowledgable in all subjects and very good to talk to. I am sure he will be missed by all Moravians both in America and Europe and especially Swindon. His family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I knew Mr. Nelson as an engaged father, proud of his daughter Barb. At Barb's birthday party in the early/mid 1980's, he was active in making her party fun for a dozen or so chatty 12 year olds. A brave and fun-loving man for sure!

I was a summer intern at the Moravian Archives for two summers (1987 and 1988), and even though I had known Vernon for some time (we were both members of Central Church), I got to know him better during those summers. Thanks to Vernon's leadership and dedication as an Archivist, the...

Vernon was very helpful when I was doing research in the Archives in the late 1970s. He found important documents, shared his knowledge of Moravian history and, equally important, gave me warm encouragement and support. We remained friends for years. He always had a ready smile, a twinkle in his eye, and a positive up-beat outlook touched with a bit of mischievousness. Many thanks, Vernon.

Vernon has been a friend of my family through many decades. I can remember when he was a student in the Moravian Theological Seminary. During the summer of 1963 I worked for him in the old Archives building that formed an "L" with Colonial Hall of Moravian College. Dr. Lothar Madeheim was working there with him even back then. I remember that a radio that only received the classical music station WFMZ sat on his desk pouring out beautiful music all through the work day. Some of Vernon's...
