I met Vernon in June of 1962 at the Winter Garden City Pool.After seeing me swim, Vernon said,"I am going to teach you how to swim correctly." That summer I went from Beginning Swimmer to Water Safety Instructor.I didn't realize Vernon was training me as his replacement when he became a Principal.Vernon was extremely capable and demanding as a Swimming Instructor.We both directed the pool some 30 years between us where 20,000+ adults and children learned to swim. I had Mr Parrish for English at Lake View High School. He was a tough teacher and I am glad I had him; he cared. Also, I now understand why when the subject of veterans came up one day he was so specific about what a veteran was. I remember that lesson well, but I never knew he was a veteran until I read the obit! I wish i had known he lived in Windermere, I would have looked him up. I am in AZ now or I would attend the memorial service. Bob Carmichael
