Vernon "Brick" Stokes, the son of Cora Grace (Hunsicker) and George W. Stokes, was born February 24, 1925 at Red Cloud, Nebraska. He departed this life on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. Brick was a lifelong resident of the Red Cloud community. He graduated from the Red Cloud High School with the class of 1942. A veteran of the United States Navy, Brick served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was discharged at war's end and returned to Red Cloud where he farmed. He also worked for many years inspecting grain storage facilities, he was a school bus driver for many years, and for fourteen years Brick was employed as a deputy with the Webster County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the American Legion Post, he was past commander of the V.F.W. Sidlo Post and the D.A.V. He possessed an inspiring love for his church and country. In his leisure time he especially enjoyed raising chickens. Preceding him in death were an infant son, Michael Vernon Stokes; his parents and brothers, Ivan, Carl and Elden Stokes and a sister, Irene Guy. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Patsy Stokes of Red Cloud; a son, Richard Stokes and wife Gayle of Kearney, Nebraska; two grandchildren, Robert and Michael Stokes; 5 great grandchildren; a sister, Deta Lindahl and husband Leo of Grand Island, Nebraska; brothers, Eugene Stokes and wife LaRue of Sioux City, Iowa; Leo Stokes and wife Sylvia of Friend, Nebraska; and Evert Stokes and wife Emily of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. The Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 5, 2014 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Red Cloud with Fr. Tom Bush officiating.
