Athens singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt has died, his record label has confirmed. "In the few short years that we knew him personally, Vic transformed our sense of what true character, grace and determination are all about. Our grief is inexpressible and Vic's absence unfathomable," said...

Not sure what to say?

discovered vic's music when I was 17 in the mid-90's. it's meant so much to me over the years. since xmas 2009, every few months I remember: oh yeah, vic chesnutt died. he was the real deal. i'll always (re)turn to his music for solace and wonder.

I don't know recall exactly how I stumbled across Vic, but it was (I think) because I had long been a fan of the band Cracker and I knew David Lowery and Vic were buds, and that was good enough for me. Simply put, Vic was a legend and when I learned of his death some three months after his passing I truly felt as though I had lost a friend. Bob Dylan is an icon to the world, and Vic was just as iconic to me. My top dozen songs of his (loosely) are Threads, Wrong Piano, Square Room, I'm...

I discovered you posthumously, when Thee Siver Mt. Zion came performing in Rome in 2010 and dedicated the concert to you. I started listening to 'A the cut', and I never stopped. I love your intense lyrics, your touching melodies and your way to be so humble and true even if you are simply GLORIOUS. Now I know all your discography and I spread your dreamy music amongst my friends. I decided to write my thesis at the university on the US (not) care/health system, cause i got impressed by your...

we love you dearly your music from spirit above / tina we love too

May the God of comfort and tender mercies continue to comfort your family and friends, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."" Please accept my sincere condolences during this time of your loss.

I had the fortune of know you, here in Spain. May 7th I will sing in the tribute concert in Madrid "Gravity of the situation" and "Strange language" with my band, Erizonte.
Please, Vic, send me strength to keep the voice unbreakeble.
Yours,
Julian Sanz

For Vic...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of...

It's nearly March and I still can't shake the loss. Where are the words? I'm afraid Vic already used them all. Perhaps there's little left to say.

Vic was a capable visual artist, too. I remember a concert early in his career which he introduced his songs with paintings he had done. His interview with Terri Cross on NPR was as honest and entertaining picture of Vic's life as you could get. A beacon poet for the times.
