Victor Reyes left the beloved Mesilla Valley and became an angel on August 22, 2021. He spent his last hours surrounded with family who loved him dearly. Anyone who knew him would say he was a hard-working and caring man with a great sense of humor. His smile would light up the room everywhere he went. Victor was a perfectionist and took great care with every project he touched.
He graced the Mesilla Valley when he was born to Jose and Mercedes Reyes in January of 1948. He learned at an early age all about farming from his abuelito and said “I’ll never farm”. He later remembered this comment when he began farming pecans in 1980. He graduated from Gadsden High School in 1967, where he met his future bride, Gloria Rios. He served in the Army for two years starting in 1968 with his time stationed in Alaska. He made a life and home with his high school sweetheart Gloria in Brazito, NM. It was here that he began his journey of becoming a weekend farmer of pecans. Victor worked at UPS, retiring after 27 years of dedicated service.
He and Gloria have two children, Marc and Valerie. He was a fine role model, showing his kids never to fear hard work, showing them love and passing along his great sense of humor.
When he retired he became a full time farmer in La Mesa and helped others with their pecan orchards through his custom farming business. He was very knowledgeable and never hesitated to use his inventive spirit to create new equipment for the farm.
Victor was predeceased by his parents, Jose and Mercedes Reyes. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife Gloria; his brother Javier Reyes (Gloria); sister Yvonne Archuleta (Deno); his son Marc and wife Tanya; his daughter Valerie Ramos and husband John. He leaves behind grandchildren Emi, Leilani and Cade. He also leaves behind a large, loving family.
A celebration of life will occur on Tuesday, August 24, at Sombra Antigua Winery located at 430 La Vina Rd, Anthony NM from 4pm-8pm. We invite his family, friends and farmers who knew him to rejoice in him joining the Lord.
The family wishes to thank his care team at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and Mesilla Valley Hospice for his care.
Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapel of Las Cruces and Sunset Crematory, 300 E. Boutz Road, 527-2222. Your exclusive provider for “Veterans and Family Memorial Care.” For online condolences logon to www.bacasfuneralchapelslascruces.com
