Vincent Slavin's fiancée called him "very outgoing, high energy, someone who walked to his own beat and never slowed down." His best friend, Tom Robinson, called him "a real New Yorker, a guy you couldn't put anywhere else."

Mr. Slavin, 41, was an equity trader and partner at Cantor Fitzgerald. He and his fiancée, Anna Baez, lived in Belle Harbor, Queens, three houses from the ocean.

Last year, he bought a vacation home on Stratton Mountain in Vermont. He and Ms. Baez drove there with their Rottweiler and their golden retriever on winter weekends for skiing and on summer weekends for biking and canoeing. There were also trips to the Cayman Islands or Belize for scuba diving.

Mr. Robinson, a private investor, and his wife often traveled with Mr. Slavin and Ms. Baez. "He brought everyone into his world," Mr. Robinson said. "Once, a co-worker mentioned in conversation that she would love to see the Oscars in person. Just like that, he got her tickets. He used to introduce me as his brother from another mother. I was proud of that."
