DECATUR - Viola Mae Hinton, 98, of Peoria, IL, (formerly of Decatur) passed away at 10:25 P.M. on Saturday, November 1, 2008 in J.C. Proctor Endowment Home in Peoria, IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, November 7, 2008 at Dawson & Wikoff West Wood Street Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to United Presbyterian Church, Peoria, IL or Cancer Society Research Fund. Viola was born in Bond County, Illinois, January 22, 1910, to Raymond and Catherine Lyons Hatfield and moved to Decatur in 1911. She married Alvin S. Hinton in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1995. They had one son, Thomas Raymond Hinton who passed away in 1988. She graduated from Decatur Grade School, Downs High School and Decatur-Macon County Nursing School. She later received her Public Health Certification from Michigan State University, and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. After graduation from nursing school, she did private duty nursing, was a school nurse in Monticello, IL and was on staff at Visiting Nurses in Decatur, IL. After relocation with husband Alvin and son Tom to Peoria, IL, she accepted the position of School Nurse at East Peoria High School, where she worked for 20 years. Viola is a member of the United Presbyterian Church and has been a member of the Eastern Star, AAUW, the Peoria Women's Club, NEA and IEA. Her hobbies were knitting, reading, playing bridge and helping others. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews, all of whom dearly loved "Auntie Vi" for her wisdom, knowledge and ability to instill her great philosophy of love and good living in all.
