Serenity Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Roanoke Obituary

Our family unexpectedly lost our family’s matriarch, Virginia Mae Hunter, on January 15th, 2024. She was just 90 years old. A fixture of her community in Pulaski, Virginia, she had a natural ability as a caregiver and a Godly impact on the lives of the many youths she taught while serving as a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist, Magazine Street in Pulaski. She had a taste for the beautiful things in life, loving flowers, animals and gospel music. Many can still testify of her commitment to her calling and her spirit of humility.  She spent many years working for Virginia Maid Hosiery (Renfro) and was a former student of the Christiansburg Institute, graduating in 1951. Though she had no children of her own, she was a loving aunt and devoted friend.

Virginia was born August 31, 1933, in Pulaski, VA where she is preceded in death by her parents Perry and Cordia (Parks) Hunter.  Having a large family with 7 siblings, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Black, Perry Hunter and Walter Hunter and sisters, Thelma Stephens of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Beverly of Pulaski, VA, Mattie S. Hash of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Lillian E. Hunter of Pulaski, VA.

She leaves a host of nieces and nephews, of several generations. These are just a few. James P. Beverly Sr., Cordnette Adams (Calvin) of VA, Bruce Black (Angie) of Ohio, Anthony Black of CA., Robin Black of TX., Jacqueline Thomas (Anthony) of NC., James Hash of  CA., Catherine Sheff (Paul) of  NC., James P. Beverly Jr. (Melissa) of VA., William P. Beverly III of  VA., Terry R. Beamer (Daryl) of  NC., Cara Stike (Glen) of  VA.; Cousins - Bobby Hayden (Janie) of Ohio and Joe Baker of Columbus, OH.  Special friends:  Ivey Tolbert, Mrs. Wysor, Joyce Crowder, Brenda Patterson and Kimberly Adams.

Honorable mention: Pastor Gary and Colette Hash of Jubilee Christian Center and the members of First Baptist church.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 23, 2024, 1:00PM at First Baptist Church 220 Magazine St. Pulaski. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church. The interment will be held in Pinehurst Cemetery, Pulaski. In lieu of flowers make donations in honor of Virginia Mae Hunter to the T.G. Howard Community Center, Pulaski.   Arrangements by Serenity Funeral Home Pulaski, (540) 980-9100. 248 Randolph Ave., Pulaski
