This is Bruce P. Grether, and Virginia was my first cousin once removed. I've just heard of her passing from her daughter Beth, who lives not far from me in Texas. I knew Virginia's parents, Ewald and Carrie, quite well. Her grandfather was my great grandfather. Though my knowledge of her was mostly second or third hand in the family web, I know that Virginia was an extraordinary person. I extend my deepest sympathies to all who knew her better than I did.

Jim, I'm so sorry for your loss. Virginia taught me how to be active in the Democratic party and how to do community service. She supported young women in politics and was one of the first to encourage me to run for the Natomas School Board. I will always appreciate her contribution to my life and to Sacramento.
