Virginia Whitt Obituary

Virginia Pugh Whitt
'Jean'
MOUNT HOLLY -- Virginia 'Jean' Pugh Whitt, age 90, of Mt. Holly, NC died October 29, 2011 at Terrace Ridge Assisted Living Center in Gastonia, NC.
Jean was born on November 18, 1920 and was the daughter of the late Ella Parker Pugh and Grady Pugh in Guilford County, NC. She grew up in High Point, NC, with her five siblings, who were raised by their mother. Jean was married on October 4, 1940 to J.C. Whitt, who lived about a block from her growing up in the Highland Mill area of High Point. Jean was primarily a homemaker during her early married years, raising their three sons. She later served as a substitute teacher for the Gaston County School System and was the librarian for the Mt. Holly Branch of the Gaston County Public Library System. Jean was a member and very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Holly where she was a member for over 53 years. She served the church as an elder and deacon, was president of the women of the church, chair of her circle, directed bible school, taught Sunday school, and she set up the church library. In addition, she delivered Meals on Wheels, prepared homemade bread for prospective members, and made bread for communion services at the church. In 2002, she received an honorary life membership in the Presbyterian Women. Jean loved her family, her community, her church, and like her mother, loved to work in her yard. She never failed to speak her mind and always had time for others. Her husband, J.C. Whitt, who died in 1989, served as Mayor of Mt. Holly from 1973-1977 and her son Robert Whitt served as Mayor of Mt. Holly from 2005-2009.
She is survived by her three sons: Robert Whitt and wife Lisa of Mt. Holly, NC, Dr. Fred Whitt and wife Donna of Boone, NC, and Parker Whitt of Winston Salem, NC. She is survived by four grandchildren: Kathryn Whitt of Charlotte, NC, Molly Whitt of Charlotte, NC, Matthew Whitt and wife Julia of Concord, NC, and Daniel Whitt of Columbia, SC. She is also survived by a sister, Johnsie Pugh Liner of Winston Salem, NC. She was preceded in death by her siblings Phillip Pugh, Garland Pugh, Daphne Pugh Hensley and Lottie Pugh Wood.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Terrace Ridge Assisted Living Center and Gaston County Hospice for their special care and assistance. In addition, the family would like to thank Pam Chulick, Jean's extraordinary caregiver and, most importantly, a cherished friend. Her care and friendship were a true blessing in Jean's life.
Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31, 2011 downstairs in the Educational Building of the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Holly, NC, 133 South Main Street, Mount Holly, NC.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Holly, NC, with the Reverend Wilson P. Rhoton, Jr. and the Reverend Jason Bryant officiating. Interment will be held at Hillcrest Gardens following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you forward any memorials to the First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Holly, 133 S. Main St., Mt. Holly, NC 28120. Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mt. Holly, NC is serving the Whitt family. Condolences may be made online at [email protected].
