Wallace Hanson Obituary

Wallace Lee Hanson, Sr., 95, of Rome, Georgia passed away Friday morning, July 5, 2024, at the Spires. Born on June 6, 1929, in Armuchee, Georgia, he was the son of Charles Wallace Hanson and Bessie Lee Tucker Hanson. Wallace married Annette Gurley Hanson on October 6, 1954. Wallace and Annette had two children. He was predeceased by his parents,Charlie and Bess, his wife of almost 61 years, Annette, and his brother, Erle Charles Hanson.

Wallace is survived by his two children, Jo Hanson Blackmon (Sonny) of Virginia Beach, VA and Wallace Lee Hanson, Jr. (Erin) of Berkeley Lake, GA., seven grandchildren, Benjamin Ryan Sheppard (Rebecca), Caitlin Hanson Gouws (Jacques), Sara Sheppard Walker (David), Alexandra Hanson Garner (Jonathan), Eliza Hanson Crawford (Mike), Mackenzie Hanson Simon (Alex), James Oliver Hanson (Shea), and eleven great-grandchildren, Jackson and Brooklyn Sheppard, Linley and Gray Gouws, Jack, Reed, and Grace Garner, Wallace and Marlowe Crawford, Dawson and Graham Simon and a number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Stacey Duncan Akin (Andy) whom he worked with for many years, and he always considered her to be a daughter, Ginger and Danny Alexander, who were always there to help him, and he considered them as his children, and his dear friend and travel companion for eight years, Betty Zane Morris.

Wallace grew up in Rome, Georgia, surrounded by many cousins. He graduated from Rome High School in 1947. Following his graduation from high school, he joined the United States Navy. He served four years during the Korean Conflict. After receiving his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Rome where he joined his father as a barber at Hanson's Barber Shop, located in the Cotton Block. In later years, Wallace moved the barber shop to the North Rome Shopping Center. Working as a barber during the day, Wallace took courses in the evening, earning his BS degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville State University.

Wallace served as a member of the Rome City Commission for twelve years. This is a service that he was extremely proud of. He felt his purpose on the Commission was to help the citizens of Rome and to better the town that he loved. If he got behind a project that he felt strongly about, he never gave up until he pushed it through to completion. He and Annette took many trips with the Commission to various conventions, and he was always proud to represent Rome.

Wallace was an avid golfer. He spent many years chasing the white ball at Callier Springs Country Club and Stonebridge Golf Club. He was the Club Champion at Callier Springs in 1964. He enjoyed traveling, meeting new people and visiting different places. He never met a stranger and loved getting together with family and friends. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church, Rome, GA.

Wallace Hanson was a good man. His one regret was that he did not live to be 100. He will be missed by many.
