Walon H. Thomas

Springhill, LA-Funeral services for Mr. Walon H. Thomas, age 86, will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, September 5, 2014 at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel, Springhill, LA, with Bro. Todd Pickard officiating. Interment will follow in Old Sarepta Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 4, 2014 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Thomas was born on December 6, 1927 to Early Benjamin and Ida Lou Kight Thomas in Leton, LA and passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in Shreveport, LA. He retired from International Paper Company after 31 years of service. He was a Daddy, Papaw and brother, that was always supportive, whether it be at football, baseball, the practice field, in a deer stand, at the rodeo arena, or at a family get together. He also loved coaching little league baseball.

As a young man, his passion was coon hunting. By night, he hunted with his Dad, brothers, numerous friends, and their dogs. By day, he hunted squirrel and deer. He was known as a great houndsman and woodsman. Later in life, as his grandchildren started hunting with him, he would rather see them harvest a deer than himself. He became their biggest cheerleader, no matter what the sport or activity.

He loved the horse races, especially when one of the thoroughbred babies he helped raise was running. You might see him at one of his many offices, i.e. Walmart, Hornet Drive-In or at Piggly Wiggly. He never met a stranger and had a multitude of friends.

The family feels one of his greatest attributes was his kindness. He never said a bad word about anyone. If you ever heard him bless the food at a meal, which he was doing just a few weeks ago, you would know he was speaking directly to God.

He is survived by three sons, Jimmie R. Davis and wife, Kay of Benton, LA, Daniel G. Thomas and wife, Brenda of Springhill, James W. Thomas and wife, Charlotte of Shongaloo; daughter, Ann Benson and husband, Bruce of Shongaloo; eight grandchildren, Dea Clayton and husband, Chuck, Darla McKinney, Michael Todd LaBlue and wife, Tammy, Shanette Caswell and husband, Robert, Janice Wynclif and husband, Will, Reed Thomas and wife, Beth, Hailey Allen, Chuck McAllister; fourteen great-grandchildren, Cory Burton, Whitney Powell, Kayla Cannon, Cassidy LaBlue, Lauren LaBlue, Thomas Allen, Leighton Thomas, Payton McAllister, Sam McAllister, Bethany McAllister, Michelle Caswell, Laura Caswell, Ryan Stroud, Konnor Wynclif; great great-grandchildren, Zachary Powell; three brothers, Bill Thomas and wife, Margaret of Leton, Buddy Thomas of Leton, Roy Thomas of Haynesville; two sisters, Dorothy Wargo and husband, David of New Orleans, LA, Helen Baumgardner of Haughton, LA; sister-in-law, Martha Thomas of Clute, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Normie B. Thomas; brothers, Bob Thomas, Elton Thomas; and sister, Willie Frances Thomas.

Pallbearers will be Michael Todd LaBlue, Reed Thomas, Chuck McAllister, Laddie Sewell, John McLain, Steve Leopard, Steve Crowe and Wayne McMahen.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Franklin, J.W. Parker, Jim Hooper, Charles Grappe, Jason Thomas and Chuck Clayton.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to Town and Country Nursing Home-Magnolia Wing, Dr. Fredy Cordova, Dr. Manish Dhawan and his nurse practitioner, Kelly, for the love and care over the past few years.
