Not sure what to say?

I was a student of Walter Beale's, at UNCG from 1982-86. I recall a sophomore writing class with him, and especially his astute assessment of me as a student. Our final exam consisted of the Walt Kelly Pogo cartoon from 1968, referencing the Oliver Hazard Perry quote, "We have met the enemy and he is us (ours)." He explained a little of the historical context, and then said, write. I have no idea what I wrote, but I clearly remember his comment to me after the fact; he said that I was clever...

Laurie, I'm thinking of you today as you remember Walter, who profoundly influenced my teaching.

What a loss to UNCG and to the world of scholarship. I use what I learned in Walter Beale's classes quite often; in fact, I talked to my students about Walter and his book Real Writing during a lecture on the classical scheme just a couple of weeks ago.

Lollie, please know that you are in my most special thoughts at this solemn time.

Lollie, Please know you and family are in my prayers. Walter certainly let the world know he was here by living his life to the fullest. He will live on eternally in your memories. Gilda

Lollie, you have my prayers and concerns for you and your family.

Our prayers are with all of you. May special memories bring you peace during this sad time.

Lollie, I was so sorry to learn of your husband´s death. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers!

Lollie, Doug and I are so sorry that we are unable to attend Walter´s Memorial Service. I just learned of it a few minutes ago and we have yard workers here as well as another commitment this afternoon. We are so sorry that Walter lost the fight!
