I had the great privilege to study with Walt in the late 1980s. He was brilliant, irascible, honest, profane, and altogether wonderful. He was generous with his time and knowledge--he kindly guest lectured to an intro class I was teaching at Pima College. I asked for an hour of his time, my students cajoled him into staying for the full 3 hours. He had them spellbound--they had no idea he was a world famous scientist, but they knew he was something special.

Upon my arrival in Tucson (20 years ago), I made an appointment to meet Dr. Birkby because I wanted to study forensic anthropology at the U of A. I had imagined a dapper, middle-aged, very tall man to meet me at the museum for our discussion. To my surprise, I was met by a short rascal, dressed in scrubs, holding a human skull...still dapper according to my standards! It turned out, during our meeting, that he was retiring from the U and his department was closing. The closest schools...
