Mr. Burn’s last year teaching was my first year of high school. My sister was one of his drum majors that year. I have such a deep respect for Mr. Burns and I was so fortunate to be his student, if only for a year. He encouraged us and somehow maintained his composure and kindness despite being surrounded by high school kids! I’m sure he is greatly missed by all who knew him. I was privileged to be a colleague band director and Central Staff member with Walter for so many years at DISD. But most importantly Walter was my friend. While we have enjoyed our retirement years in Arkansas, the down-side has been an absence for continuing that friendship since our retirement many years ago. Rest in peace my friend.

Mr. Burns was the kindest and gentlest teacher. I remember first seeing him, in 1964 as we were waiting for Mr. Williams to open the door to the Franklin band hall for summer band. He was a constant in my life till I graduated from Hillcrest and the band in 1969. He was encouraging to me when I felt no one else was—of course that feeling is typical for a teenager.
