The Reverend Dr. Walter Garfield Dixon, Sr. entered into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Dr. Dixon was born in Lincoln County, Brookhaven, MS to the late Walter Emmett and Julia Geneva Dixon on January 6, 1918. Dr. Dixon attended Central Bible Institute in Springfield, MO and became an ordained Assemblies of God Minister in 1940. He received a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Southeastern Bible College of the Assemblies of God in 1979. During his years in the ministry he served as pastor of First Assembly of God in Florence, SC and Southside Assembly of God in Greenville, SC. In 1950, Dr. Dixon was elected to serve as district superintendent of the SC District. His tenure of 30 years was the second longest of any district superintendent in the history of the Assemblies of God. He also served as executive presbyter of the General Council of Assemblies of God in Springfield, MO. Dr. Dixon was the widower of his beloved Dannie Creech Dixon. After the death of his first wife, he married Asilee Looper, a retired school teacher. He survived his sisters, Clyde Floyd Belle Isle, Tennie Bates, Vera Jones, Minnie Ingouf and Blanche Parkman; and bothers, Hudson Dixon and Vick Dixon. Survivors are his wife, Asilee Looper Dixon of Easley; a son, Walter G. Dixon, Jr. of Greenville; a daughter, Ruth Dannelle Bloomer and husband, Larry Bloomer, of Greenville; grandchildren, Jessica Lee Brooks and husband, Dendy Brooks of Greenville, Lisa Michelle Dixon of Charleston, Angela Gayle Kirkpatrick and husband, Joe Kirkpatrick, of Rock Hill; Walter G. Dixon, III of Rock Hill; great grandchildren, Lucy, Walker and Thompson Kirkpatrick, Michaela Dixon and Daven Brooks; a niece, Lynda Dixon Anthony of Americus, GA; a nephew, Terry G. Dixon of Birmingham, AL as well as other nieces and nephews. "Papa" will be greatly missed by all of his loving family and friends. The family wishes to thank Carolyn Crowe for her kind, compassionate care and the staff of NHC, Mauldin. Memorials may be made to Caris Healthcare, 208 Adley Way, Greenville, SC 29607. Visitation will be held Friday, April 17, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the downtown chapel. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will be at their respective homes.
