ECKERT WALTER "SONNY" ECKERT. He was handsome and dapper - a young engineering student and Air Force pilot with chiseled cheeks and blue eyes that smiled. And the moment he spotted Joanne Ruthenberg, the smart, sassy editor of the student newspaper at the University of Akron, he swore he would...

To Anne and her family -
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad, Anne. You always spoke so highly of him and although I never met him, always made me feel that I could sit next to him and pick up conversation as if we were friends and just saw each other the day before! In reading his obituary and all of the comments, I know he was a remarkable man, a loving Dad (Grandpa, uncle, cousin, etc.!), a steadfast friend. I can tell he was loved by all and will be remembered and...

Thanks to all of you who have posted such warm, supportive thoughts and interesting stories about our parents. Dad and Mom would have loved the memorial service today, as it was all about family. As Kristy said in her eulogy: Grandpa Sonny built more than a house; he built a family. We are very grateful to have had them as long as we did. Such a neat tribute to such a wonderful man..I always enjoyed Mr. Eckert and Joanne. They were made for each other and always so friendly with every contact. It was my privilege to know all the children and grandchildren, who exemplified that same love, friendliness and compassion. May God comfort all the family and bring these positive memories constantly in all the days to come. Love to the family, Jim Biss

"Sonny" was the oldest of the 5 cousins who grew up in Akron and spent Holidays and time at Grandma and Grandpa's house on our mothers side of the family. I was the youngest so he knew me from the day I was born.
I was honored to be at the Wedding of Jo and Sonny...a lovely outdoor affair.
May he join his sister, brother, and my brother Bobby in Heaven....from a loving cousin.
