Walter Egan of the Brookfield section of White Township, Belvidere, NJ, formerly of Berkeley Heights died on Monday, April 8, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 7, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late William John Egan and Gertrude Catherine Russlend. Walter moved to Queens in 1938 where he later attended Queens College and CCNY and graduated with a BCHE and earned a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering from NYU. In August 1953, he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Hood. They lived in Berkeley Heights, NJ for 42 years where he was an active member of Little Flower Church, served as a lector and song leader for over 30 years. They moved in 2002 to the Brookfield section of White Township where they would spend their retirement. Walter worked his entire professional career for Union Carbide Corporation. He began in Research and Development where he pioneered the use of plastic for packaging of food and other products. In 1961, he led a team of researchers in the development of Glad Wrap, which is still in use today. In the latter part of his career, Walter worked mainly as Manager of Chemical Distributions, both domestic and international. After a long and successful career, he retired in 1993. In his retirement he enjoyed golf, travel, and time with his grandchildren. Walter was an active member of the Board of Directors of the Brookfield community where he served as Secretary and Treasurer. Surviving are his loving wife Barbara; four children, Ken and wife Marcia, Kathy Taylor and husband Dave, Paul and wife Kelly, and John and wife Mary; 13 grandchildren, Heather, Matthew, Daniel, Ryan, Kylen, Brian, Erin, Eric, Christina, Patrick, Michael, Emily and Allison.
