WALTER KAISER

A wonderful man who led an extraordinary life - J. Mountbatten.

When I came to work at I Tatti in 1991 Walter was the director, a great boss, a great man and a friend. After his retirement we still kept in touch and my family and I were lucky to meet him again a few years ago when he came to visit Florence. We will miss him. Condolences to his family, who he loved dearly.

Walter was my guide to sixteenth-century literature long before I met him. As benevolent autocrat of the lunch table at I Tatti, he kept us on our toes as well as teaching us and entertaining us, and his kindness and generosity to fellows and their families revealed themselves on many unexpected occasions. His intellect and his unbounded appreciation for beauty also enriched us all.

As a former Fellow at I Tatti who benefited from Walter's vision (and enjoyed sparring with his formidable wit), I send condolences and this small testimony to the gift his life was to the world.
