Not sure what to say?

An RN on the oncology floor summed it up best "He is a man who reached his full potential." From 1966, until his death in 2021 two years ago, no one at MCV was more known, revered or beloved than Walter Lawerence. An honor to have worked with him and still marvel at his exceptional character. Love to the family during his remembrance.

His tender manner and great respect and concern for his patient will always be remembered. A gentle giant among us, his impact on cancer surgery was immense and the richness of his character immeasurable.

I met Dr Lawrence at VCU in 2016 when I was recruited as a junior faculty. His immense accomplishments in the field of surgery are a testament to his dedication, love and passion for surgery. Such a towering personality yet so unassuming and his wit at age 96 will I reckon very difficult to match. He has set a very high bar! We will miss him dearly !!!!

Gone from our sight, but never from our heart. It was a pleasure to to be in his company, also his family member.

Walter was an awesome surgeon and person. I consider him a mentor and a friend. Though we don´t always agree, our disagreements were instructive, but fortunately we frequently agreed; both made me happy. I will miss his company and sage advice.

I had the privilege of working at VCU Health Systems in Surgical Oncology with Dr. Lawrence. I loved to sit and listen to the stories he told of his life and family. He was a gentle soul. To Dr. Lawrence's family, I offer my deepest sympathies. May you feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

This is a man who reached his full potential. Few were as beloved at MCV/VCU. The same gentle voice, with respect and admiration, for everyone he addressed: colleague, student, or patient. An exceptional individual in whom we can all take pride. How fortunate and forever inspired we are who knew him.

Dr. Walter Lawrence Jr., an exceptional "STEM Educator, Innovator, and Motivator" To the family, my respectful condolences I extend. His medical and health sciences contributions, have made individuals and communities healthier and hopeful for better days, and projected the pursuit of continued advancements in the field of medicine. May his compassion and great legacy surround the void he leaves behind. Now Dr. Lawrence Jr., well done, and rests in the loving care of, "Our Heavenly...

I had the pleasure of working as Dr Lawrence's nurse in the Dalton Clinic for 12 years. His gentleness and compassion with all our pts so impressed me. Forever he became my idol of what a physician should be ... could be. I will miss him very much.
