Walter G. "Walt" Looney

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Looney as my math teacher and football coach(78-80)He represented hard work, character, class and respect. A true Trojan. He will be missed.

Mr. Looney holds some of the fondest and funnies memories I have of any teacher at Wilson... and that from a math teacher is impressive! He coached my brother in baseball and my sister and I in math. A truely caring and hilarious man who will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of playing football and baseball for Coach Looney from 1973-1977. He was a leader, an inspiration and a perfectionist. He treated his players with respect and compassion. Off the field I was lucky to have him as a math guru. He made a difficult subject fun and relevent. He will be missed but always remembered.

I remember Glenn Looney from my childhood because he was friends of my grandparents, Kathryn and Camille Stupfel, and my Uncle George Stupfel in Salem. I talked to Walt in 2000 at a Wilson football game after my uncle died and he told me then that George had been a pall bearer for Glenn's funeral. All the best to your family during this difficult time from the extended Stupfel family.

I played football at Wilson Highschool and was fortunate enough to be coached by Walt Looney. Coach Looney was an instrumental leader and mentor often combining these skills with a punctuated wit and finesse. He instilled a sense of comradery and confidence among the players which was inevitably reciprocated by the team's undeniable inspiration. Never before had I felt so compelled to earn a coaches respect. Those football days are long gone now but coach, I just want everyone to know that...

When I think of Walt I think of character and class. I had the great pleasure of playing on the gridiron for Walt, and of also experiencing his great passion for teaching. He brought passion, intelligence, and a sense of humor to the field and classroom. Great Man to many.

Walt Looney was my coach. He taught me the fundamentals of baseball that I have gone on to teach youth players today. Walt Looney was my friend. He would often write inspirational and motivational letters to me while attending college. After reading the obit, I now even more realize just how accomplished his life had been and what a humble great man he truly was. Thanks for everything coach.

Walt Looney was a man who valued character and taught it. I was privilaged to have been taught and coached by a good man. I count him as a friend. Thanks for the good times, coach!

I played baseball and football for Walt, and to this day practice the things he taught me and my sports family at Wilson, he played a big part in my personal life and was a father to all of us, I still repeat the stories he told me, and am honered to have been taught by a man of his qualities and dignity, Walt and Sue were like family and we all will miss him alot..... A true inspiration.
