MAGEE, Walter J.
Walter J. Magee, 91, formerly of Wethersfield, left this world on Monday (July 1, 2013) to be with his one and only true love, his late wife Catherine (Hamilton) Magee. He passed away at the Suffield House, where he had lived for the past two years. Born on October 26, 1921 in Hartford, he was the son of the late Henry and Margaret (Freeburn) Magee and was a lifelong resident of Wethersfield. Walter was a proud U.S. Army Air Corps veteran serving in Greenland during World War II, where he worked on airplane engines. Prior to entering the service, he had been accepted into The Hartford Art School, where he planned on pursuing commercial art. This was not to be. Instead, he became a top salesman for B.F. Goodrich for many years, selling industrial belting to companies such as Pratt & Whitney. He started his own business, CT Valley Rubber, at the age of 58 and retired shortly after. Walter was a 50 plus year member of South Congregational Church in Hartford, serving as a deacon and in many other capacities. He and Catherine loved traveling, especially to the Virgin Islands with many dear friends. Walter was a very well rounded person. He enjoyed playing golf, reading, solving crossword puzzles, and he could fix anything that needed repairing. He was also a Civil War buff and he made many delicate model airplanes which will be forever treasured by his family. He will be dearly missed by loving and devoted daughter, Nancy Paparella and her husband Michael of Windsor; his son, Brian Magee and his wife Sandy of Wethersfield, son, Warren Magee of Old Saybrook; four adored grandchildren; Elizabeth, Michael, Roger and Jennifer and her husband Eric and four cherished great-grandchildren, Mariah, Sadie, Samantha and Joshua. In addition to his wife and parents, Walter was predeceased by his brother, Herbert Magee and sister, Isabelle D'Errico. The Magee family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Suffield House. Our dad and grandpa will be remembered as a true gentleman with a sharp wit and dry sense of humor, but more than anything as a caring, giving wonderful man.
Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in South Congregational Church, 277 Main St., Hartford. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church. Burial with military honors will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. There are no calling hours. Donations in Walter's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2075 Silas Deane Hwy., Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067. The D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, Wethersfield is handling arrangements. I'm sorry for the great loss. Even though we've never met I feel like I known him for years through his granddaughter Elizabeth Paparella with all of the joyful stories. He will be truely missed & it was a big loss not to get a chance to meet such a special person.
