Not sure what to say?

Gretl,
As you know, I was one of Walter's early students, at Michigan State. He convinced me to come back to Michigan from the East Coast, after a visit to the (then) Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Silver Spring, MD. Officially Prof. Hiedemann was my advisor, but in fact, Walter really was, as Hiedemann was ill during my time at Michigan State. The times with Walter, Mack Breazeale, Bill Cook and Logan Hargrove bring back many fond memories. Remember your arrival in the DC area with Walter...

Walter was an amazing, giving, gentle man. I owe him more than I can list - he brought me to Georgetown to study, found me my first job, and encouraged me throughout my career. He was a mentor, an advisor, and a friend -- and he showed me how to live life, including how to be happy, and how to be loving and connected ... as he was with Gretl. I will miss him -- but will think of him often.

Dear Gretl,
I am so sorry for your loss. May memories of happier times with Walter help to comfort you.
With warm sympathy,
Elaine Moses

WE will always remember Walter at the bar on the high stools having dinner and having many laughs with those around him. We will miss him. He and Gretl are in our prayers.

we remember Walter and Gretl at dinner on the high stools in the Bistro at Ingleside

I have only known Walter for about 2 years but will never forget him and the great joy I had dining with him and Gretl many evenings, discussing events in Germany and at Georgetown University. I will always remember and pray for him when I attend Mass.
