Not sure what to say?

CAPT Dave Opfer was my boss, a mentor, and a friend. We served at Branch Medical Clinic Naval Air Station North Island. He was practical and caring as a leader, and astute and empathetic as physician. I must add that on the baseketball court and soccer pitch he was a charged and tenacious competitor. I gained from him in the workplace and lost to him in competition. Dave you will be missed. Thanks for being here.

My sincere condolences to Michael and the entire family.

Dave was one extraordinary, amazing, wonderful, loving, kind, gentle, helpful, considerate man. There are not enough adjectives to describe him. He has touched the lives of many, including mine for over 20 years. He was Daddy Dave to my kids, which he treated as if they were his own grandchildren. His dedication to his family, friends and country will forever be etched on our hearts. His smile lit up a room and the true joy he felt when around kids was evident. The world has lost a...

Daddy David was a wonderful man. He was strong, generous, and understanding. He was an amazing grandfather and he will always be in our hearts and on our minds. I loved the visits to see him and his kind smile that lit up the room. He always played with me and my sister when we were little, never yelled, and was great at helping us with anything we needed. What he did for others was overwhelming and I can never imagine making the sacrifices for others that he did. He was honstly a great,...

I am saddened to read of CAPT Opher's passing. He was my Senior Medical Officer and preceptor at NAS NI Medical Clinic as I started my career as a Navy Physician Assistant. What a kind soul and he will be missed.

Dave was our neighbor, a friendly guy, always having a ready smile or a wave when passing by. I remember the medical advice he gave me - humorously pointing out that I needed stiches. Our children played and went to school together. Michael and family, our most sincere regrets for your loss. Dave will be remembered and missed by all of us.

We could always count on Dave for any volunteer activity. He cooked many hot dogs at various events, took tickets, ran errands for forgotten supplies, or was readily available to help however needed. He always supported whatever the event or cause with which his family was involved.

Dave and I first worked together when he came to relieve me as Senior Medical Officer on the Ranger. Later working together as Branch Clinic Heads and finally during his last tour down an NOMI were certainly highlights for me. A wonderful, generous, unfailingly optimistic man and colleague! It was a real honor to participate in his retirement ceremony as Emcee.

Michael, my heartfelt sadness for you and thanks for sharing Dave with so many of us.

Dave or Daddy David as us kids called him was the strongest and most amazing man I'll ever meet . He will forever be in my thoughts. He has always been like a grandfather to me and my sister. He will be deeply missed. I saw him until the end and he always showed me how much life meant even if I coudn't see it then I'll always see it now.

Dave was a wonderful person to be around. I am glad that I had the opportunity to know him and enjoy his company. I am thankful for the medical advice he offered to my wife. He was a determined fighter. He will be missed. My prayers go out to the family. May you be strengthened by his memories.

Sincerely,
Steve Meriweather, Sr
