Walter (John) Parlet, 91, of Tyler, TX passed away Thursday, February 6, 2025 at the Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. Born June 11, 1933 at his family home in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Roy Howard Parlett and Reba Elizabeth (Miller) Parlett. He is survived by Peggy (Warren) Parlett, his loving wife of 47 years.
In addition to his wife, Walter is survived by his biological daughter, Anna Parlett- Bickford (Larry) of Stewartstown, PA and five step children: Vicki Cantrell (Dayle), Margaret Hemann (Ronnie), Les Schminkey (Laura), Rebecca Smith (Dane) and Jessica Rudman (Neven). He is also survived by his brother William “Bill” Parlett and his wife Jane, of New Freedom, PA. His brother Bob Parlett from Huntingdon, PA preceded him in death in 2018. Walter will also be missed by numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
Walter attended Stewartstown High School and graduated in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army in the 101st Airborne, 25th Division during the Korean War and earned the rank of corporal. He accepted a position as a production worker at Lyons Metal in Red Lion, PA and attended Penn State University, York Campus, taking courses in accounting, math and business law. His employment history includes working in the business departments at the Bon Ton, Bears Department Store, Throne Lumber Company and various businesses in Texas including Lustra Lighting. He retired from Cade Lumber in 1986. His postretirement hobbies included wood working, fishing, yard work and adopting and caring for many stray cats and dogs. He enjoyed sharing his handyman skills with his neighbors.
A celebration of John’s life with Military Honors will be held in the chapel at Jackson’s Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home on 215 East Front Street in Tyler, TX at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in remembrance of Walter Parlett can be made to the Hospice of East Texas (4111 University Blvd. Tyler, TX 75701.) Additionally, contributions may be made to the Veteran’s Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or an animal shelter of your choice.
