SHIPLEY--Walter. Respected businessman, compassionate family man. Walter V. Shipley, who helped launch a wave of major bank mergers that ultimately led to the formation of what is now JPMorgan Chase, died on January 11, 2019 at the age of 83. "Walter was the original architect behind the open,...

Not sure what to say?

My experience of Walter Shipley was that he was very approachable and unassuming, despite his prestigious role at (then) Chemical Bank, which is when I first met him while employed at the Bank. When I'd go to his office to obtain his signature, he'd greet me with a simple "hi" in his usual calm and unpretentious manner. A very capable and bright person. His memory lives on in those who have met him. God bless the family of this great man!

My parents, Jesse and Becky Harrison, worked for Walter and Judy for several years at their Ponte Vedra home. They loved your parents like family. I cannot put into words how kind and compassionate they were towards my family. Your father was an amazing man! He went above and beyond for my mother during her illness and after her death. I am so sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in the fact that your dad and mom are cherished by so many people. I am so thankful that I was able to know...

To the Shipley family,

Sending our condolences. Your father and mother were lifelong friends of my parents, Skip & Ingrid Zola. They shared many happy times over the years and were genuinely adored by my parents. They will be missed dearly and those special friendships will never be forgotten.

We have a funny memory of your dad at my mother's surprise party many years ago when our son was a little boy. He placed him on his knee and challenged him with math...

Condolences to the Shipley family from the Pistells of Summit, whose children had his son John as a biology teacher at Summit High School. My son particularly remembers Mr Shipley's generosity for local fundraising, when a group of students stopped at his home for donations to the high school music program. Not only was he kind and friendly to the young boys, he gave them a $100 bill which left quite the impression on our son. What an amazing life your Dad led, a great example to young people...

I am the son of the late Dr. Robert Lindberg (d. 4/13) who was one of Walter's closest friends in college. Dad often spoke fondly of Walter, and I regret never having the chance to meet him.
I would like to express my condolences to the family and offer an ear for the swapping of "dad stories" if ever you feel inclined.
Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.
Warmly,
Stig Lindberg

May your beloved dad R.I.P. and may our Heavenly Father bless and comfort grieving family and friends.

Dear Shipley Clan,

I am so sorry about Walter. He was my father's (Bob Lindberg) best friend and was mentioned numerous times over my father's life. Dad always had a story of Walt or just fond good feeling memories of him.

I wish you all the best getting through these tough days.

I often think back to Chemical Bank days when I'd deliver financial reports to Mr. Shipley and/or obtain his signature on documents. He was very unassuming and approachable. A truly wonderful man. My deepest sympathy to the family at their loss. May he be watching over them now from above. Prayers go out to the family. May the angels greet him into Paradise.

We shall truly miss a Wonderful Man of God, Mr. Walter Shipley, who so lovingly supported us & our Mission of Greater Life in Newark, NJ. Our Prayers go out to entire Family & Friends. Lovingly yours!
