Coach Mitchell is loved and admired by countless NNHS Alumni. His basketball teams, especially the undefeated 1964 State Championship team, gave us enormous and enduring pride in our school. The Championship Team is still remembered and discussed these 56 years later and will be for years to come. I was a junior on coach Mitchell's undefeated VA state championship team in 1964. I was devestated when he left for Davidson before my senior season. Coach Mitchell helped shape my life in a positive way. RIP my friend and mentor.

Coach Mitchell was the best. At Newport News HS not only did he win the State Group A Basketball Championship, he also was a coach for the Undefeated Football team in the 1962 season.
