Wendell Haley (affectionately known as Big Wen), 75 was born March 10, 1947, in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Walter and Thelma Haley. He departed this life on Sunday, October 2, 2022. In addition to his parents, Wendell was preceded in death by five brothers; Bobby Haley, Billy Haley, Frank Haley, Raymond Haley and Kenneth Haley; two sisters; Debra Haley, Diane Haley; and three grandchildren Arazae Johnson, Joshua Frazier and Tajzmah Hall all of Roanoke, VA.


Wendell received his education in Roanoke City Public Schools.  He played recreational football as a kid and fell in love with the sport. During his school years, Wendell made the Lucy Addison High School varsity football team while attending Booker T. Washington Junior  High.  He was an avid supporter of William Fleming High School sports and often attended basketball and football games with his brothers, Raymond and Carl.  Wendell was also a fighter at the Police Athletic League as a teenager, where he won the state golden gloves heavyweight title.


Wendell was a dedicated employee of Property Maintenance Corporation, where he served as a supervisor.  He was a born again Christian and  member of Garden of Prayer #6.  He was known to be a soft-spoken person with a kind spirit.


Wendell leaves to rejoice in his memories, one brother, Carl (Jacqueline) Haley; five sons, Keith (Pamela) Montree, Sr., DeCarlos Johnson, Wendell Johnson, Kevin Ward and Jermaine Wade; two daughters, Tiffani Haley and Wendy Johnson; two devoted grandchildren, Malique Williams and Raheem Johnson,  and a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.


A funeral service will be held Friday, October 7, 2022, 2:00PM at Serenity. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Friends may visit at Serenity on Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 2PM-5PM for viewing.
