Wendell E. Townsend, 83, of Mesa, died October 11, 2006 at Chandler Regional Hospital. Mr. Townsend was born in Warren, Ohio on March 15, 1923. He earned a Bachelors in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, and later earned Masters from both Kent State University and the University of Arizona. During the the Second World War he served as a lieutenant in the Navy. After moving to Arizona, Mr. Townsend taught math and science, and coached girls' sports at Supai, Apache and Tonto Junior High Schools in Scottsdale. He continued to substitute teach after his retirement, and worked security at the Arizona State Fairgrounds for many years. He is survived by his daughter, Kit, of Maricopa and his sister, Mildred Wright, of Mesa. The memorial service will be Saturday, October 14th, at 1:30 PM at Tempe First United Methodist Church, located at 215 E. University Drive in Tempe, Arizona.
