William Neil Abston, lovingly known as Bill, passed away on October 26, 2025, at the age of 75. He lived in Estill Springs, Tennessee.
Bill was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and raised in Gadsden, where his talent for football quickly became clear. His hard work and athletic ability earned him a scholarship to Auburn University. He later completed his college football career at Jacksonville State, during which time he also served in the Alabama Air National Guard. Football remained a lifelong passion, especially Alabama football. Anyone who knew Bill knew that Saturdays were sacred. For years, he hosted legendary game day gatherings at his home, and his good friend Glenn Wenger said it perfectly: Bill was “the host with the most.”
Along with being a devoted fan, Bill was a natural entertainer. He had a great sense of humor and could make anyone laugh. He was also an incredible guitar player who always showed up to a party ready to play, sing, and bring people together through music.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Lester D. “Bill” Abston and Nell Abston; his brother Jeff; and his sister Zoë. He is survived by his sister, Deborah.
Above all, Bill was proudest of his family. He is survived by his children, Cody Abston and Emily Abston, as well as his grandchildren: Emma, John William, Bear, and Izzy, great grandchildren Oakleigh and Dannon — each of them loved their Pawpaw deeply.
Bill will be remembered for his laughter, his music, his hospitality, and his unwavering love for the Crimson Tide. His memory will continue in the joy he shared and the many stories he leaves behind.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Bill and I went to school together through to GHS and attended Central Methodist Church, growing up. My heart breaks for Deborah! She's has so many losses, recently. Bill will now be entertaining all who are in Heaven and be with Jeff, Zoe and his Mama & Daddy.
