Bill was a very good friend and he served the world of South-Asian Studies in numerous ways, many of which will remain unnoticed.I use the word 'served' intentionally.Decades ago he doggedly worked on the 'Bibliographic Synthesis' that beginning graduate students in the succeeding decades have all used most gratefully.His last act of service in India that I recall was an attempt--with some success-- to improve the catalog of books in the Cheena Bhavan at Tagore's university Visva...
