The Honorable William “Bill” Battaile, age 91, of Winchester, VA, died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Battaile was born January 7, 1913, in Westmoreland County, VA, the son of the late Lawrence Cosmos and Blanche McCauley Battaile. He was the owner of B & M Chevrolet in Winchester for thirty-nine years. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, of which he was a former Junior Warden. He was a member and former President of Winchester Host Lions Club, the Fraternal Order of Police, and a former member and President of the Winchester/Frederick County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Battaile served on the city council from 1960 to 1964. Mr. Battaile was a member and former Governor of Winchester Moose Lodge # 1283. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge AF and AM. He was a former member and President of Winchester/Frederick County Jaycees, a former member of Izaak Walton League, and former Board Member and Chairman of 1st American Bank. He had served as a member of the Handley Board of Trustees and the Shenandoah University Board of Trustees. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Arizona and Coast Guard. Mr. Battaile was a founder of the Industrial Development Commission.

The Honorable William Battaile served as Mayor of the City of Winchester from 1964 to 1972.

He married Virginia Frances Burk on June 5, 1941, in Washington. DC. Mrs. Battaile died on February 17, 2003.

Surviving are two sons, John William Battaile of Stanardsville, VA and Lawrence Gordon Battaile of Nags Head, NC; two daughters, Janet White Battaile of Chevy Chase, MD and Jeannie Burke Battaile of Winchester, VA; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren.

A sister, Anne Hennessey of Norfolk, VA preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 - Noon on Monday at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Douglas McCaleb officiating.

Pallbearers will be Bill Battaile, Robyn Battaile, Ben Battaile, Jesse Battaile, Megan Battaile, Lauren Battaile, Glen P Burke, Charles A. Pine, Jr., Charles Zuckerman, Jay Russell, Jim Stutzman, Jr., Harry Byrd, Jr., William Heidelberger, Bernie Swope, Bill Rinker, Ben Dutton, Vic Aurther.

The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church-Restoration of the Sanctuary Fund, 134 W. Boscawen Street, Winchester, VA 22601 or Ephesus Christian Church, 364 Horners Mill Road, Foneswood, VA 22461.
