William T. Caffrey, 90, of Superior, Friday, Dec. 7, 2007 at St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. William will be missed by his loving family and friends who appreciated his caring ways and his continuing hunger for knowledge. He was born June 12, 1917 in Superior, son of Thomas and Erne (Lund) Caffrey. On Nov. 30, 1940 he married Dorothy Sorensen. Bill served overseas in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. For 26 years he worked for as a pump mechanic for Murphy Oil USA Inc., retiring in 1977. Prior to his employment at Murphy Oil, he worked for Superior Tent and Awning, and many other jobs. Some of his interests included downhill skiing, golfing, hunting, fishing, dancing, camping, doing leather crafts, playing volleyball. For many years, Bill and his wife, Dorothy, were 4-H leaders at 4 Corners 4-H Club. Bill was also a member of the Independent Union of Operating Engineers 305, and a life member of The Richard I Bong American Legion Post 435. Preceding him in death was his wife of 54 years, Dorothy in 1994; son, Thomas W. in 1970; brother, Robert W. 2006 (one year ago to the day); and parents, Thomas and Erne Caffrey. Survivors include his daughter, Barbara (Michael, Sr.) Fisher, Superior; sons, Richard (Dianne) Caffrey, South Range, Michael (Joanne) Caffrey, Helenville, Wis., and R. Patrick (Peg Zappen) Caffrey, Trempealeau, Wis.; grandchildren, Richard (Kim Fuller) Caffrey, Lynnette Markulla, Neil (Kathy) Caffrey, Brenda (Eric Crowe) Johnson, Angela (Louie) Jensen, Laura (Kris) Hatch and Michael (Jenny) Fisher, Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Miriam "June" Zanuzoski, Superior; special friend, Lila Proffit, Superior, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. VISITATION:5 with a 6 p.m. service of remembrance, Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007 in Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Avenue and N. 19th Street. Military Honors will be accorded at the funeral home by the combined Thomas F. Stein V.F.W. Post 1091 and Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435. Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to our Local Public Television WDSE TV, Superior Salvation Army, or plant a tree or bush in his memory.
