Not sure what to say?

Having not learned of Bill's passing until recently, this message comes late. But hopefully it will still be read by some of those who knew Bill and will reflect well on such a deserving personality. During my earliest undergraduate years at the University of Oregon, Bill was one of the two most influential professors (the other was Françoise Durrant). Always exploratory and looking for the big picture, his specialty field in Medieval studies was simply en entry point and a touchstone from...

Mon cher papa,
Not a day goes by that I don't think about you and all that I learned from you. Impeccable, inquisitive, humble, passionate, witty, caring. You were and always will be my role model.
Until we meet again, rest in the arms of our Loving Father.

He supported the discipline with verve, humanity, and incredible energy, and he was selfless in helping others find their intellectual and practical way. Dr. Calin, vous manquez déjà à tous vos "enfants" doctorants. Profitez bien de vos balades, là-haut, avec tous ces poètes et autres auteurs que vous avez tant aimé et que vous retrouvez enfin. Cheers !

A true gentleman that will truly be missed! i am so glad i got to meet this man and work with him!

I was always glad to see Bill Calin on UF campus, he was always a pleasure to speak with and he had a gift of turning learning into dialogue. He inspired us and brought the best out of those around him. He was a founder of new Medieval Studies, changing the way we think about an era, its art and literary contributions. He will not be forgotten on the UF campus where he gave so freely of himself and his time and was loved and by so many. Peace and love Bill, your memory is blessing for...

Dearest Bill,

Your linguistic and literary expertise were an inspiration to so many. Your warm, witty and generous spirit endures.
Bonnie Krueger, Professor of French, Hamilton College

It speaks to Bill's eagerness to expand his horizons constantly, that he undertook the study of modern Occitan at the age of 50, which is when and where I got to know him. His wit and his rigor worked hand in hand. He will be sorely missed.
