How I Looked Then

What a fabulous teacher. I attended the 1978 National Endowment for the Humanities Seminar and was bowled over by his intellect. I've never listened harder to any professor EVER. And I'm an alumnus of several Top 10 universities. I am STILL using the material I learned from him. As a matter of fact, I have a conference coming up and I'm going to work from the notes he gave me so many years ago. Rest in peace.

I was a student of Dr Coles at the University of Pittsburgh. He taught me so much about simple, clear, concise writing, which has served me well in the almost thirty years of my life after college. More importantly, he taught me about clear and logical thinking. He was a great teacher and a friend. I hadn't seen him for many years, and recently learned of his death, but I will never forget him.

If one were to put a photo of Bill in the dictionary, it would fall under the definitions of humility, kindness, and service. He will be genuinely missed. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

Dear Jan - so sorry to hear about the loss of Bill. Please let me know if I can help you in any way as you grieve this terrible loss. I was so fond of Bill. You were such a gift to him and he loved his life with you.

So many must now endure so great a loss. The eternal fact of what this man did for each of us and the human memories we cherish--such a gift. Such a gift.
