William E. 'Ted' Dunbar, 84, of Englewood, FL educator, athlete, coach and mentor to many, died Wednesday January 7, 2015. He was born April 10, 1930 in Bakersfield, CA. Ted was the son of William H. K. Dunbar and Jane Maas Dunbar. He leaves his wife of 34 years, Betty J. 'Charlie' Klier Dunbar.
Ted grew up in Rio Vista, CA, where he was a star athlete at Rio Vista High School, returning as a teacher, athletic director and coach of the football team for nine years, amassing an 80 percent winning record. From 1979 to 1985 he served as Principal of Sonora High School, Sonora, CA and then Butte Valley High School in Dorris, CA before retiring. Ted received his AA degree from Santa Rosa Junior College where he led the football team as co-captain and quarterback to a 12-0 record in 1950. He was inducted into the SRJC Hall of Fame in 2006.
He received his BS degree at the University of Oregon and a Master's degree from the University of the Pacific.
Ted served in the US Army and played football in 1954 with the Fort Ord Warriors. Ted was an avid golfer and especially enjoyed camping and traveling with 'Charlie' in their RV.
Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Terry (William) Teague of Slidell, LA; son, James (Karen) Dunbar of Placerville, CA; brother, Walter Dunbar of Bakersfield, CA; step-daughter, Holly (Allan) Masri of Alexandria, VA; step-son Henry (Irene) Holst of Novi, MI and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, David Dunbar.
