Bill was instrumental in helping me to restore a Fish Sloop in the 60's, and then allowed me to purchase a 12 1/2 and come to the Championships despite the fact that I was /am a Democrat. There was some muttering but it was soto voce.
He was gracious and generous to a fault with his advice and knowledge, and helped me become a better sailor and to have a sense of the arc of history that I was a part of.
Like N.G. and L Francis he was uncommon, and his like is rare, more's the pity....
