William Hinson Obituary

William Hinson
March 5, 1936 - May 17, 2021
Charlotte, North Carolina - Mr. William (Colin) Hinson, 85, of Charlotte, NC passed away Monday, May 17, 2021 at Presbyterian Hospital. Colin had fallen two weeks earlier while attempting to hoist a 72lb lawn mower engine up his front stairs with his commercial dolly while wearing socks. He did well with surgery to repair his severed thigh bone, but developed delirium, and had an episode where his brain went without oxygen for too long.
Born at home March 5, 1936 in Union County, NC, Colin was a son of the late John Lawrence Hinson and Alma Greene Hinson. He had 12 years of perfect attendance in school, attending both Jackson and Prospect. Colin served 12 years in the Army Reserves. After working for Davis Mechanical, and then with family at AAA Appliance, Colin went in to business for himself in 1969 where he and his wife operated Crown Appliance Service. Colin loved the Lord with all his heart, and was a faithful member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church for over 50 years, and most recently, Blair Road UMC.
Colin loved his family, church family, friends, and neighbors, and they loved him back. Over the years, Colin was active with Methodist Men, Boy Scouts, Music Makers, Prayer Ministry, Homeless Ministry, Church Choir, and the Cokesbury Sunday School Class. He competitively coached boys, girls, and men's softball and basketball teams. He loved to travel with Christian Tours, and yard work was his therapy. He was a true Giver, and never met a stranger.
In addition to his parents, Colin was preceded in death by sisters, Estelene LaTour and Betty Rorie, and brother, Lawrence Hinson.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Janice Stephens Hinson; two children, Scott Hinson and his wife, Marcia, of Mint Hill, NC, and Susan Fennell of Belmont, NC; two sisters, Mabel Helms of Monroe, NC, and Margaret Melton, of Roswell, GA; a granddaughter, Sheridan Fennell, of Gastonia NC, and a grandson, Hunter Fennell, currently stationed in Anchorage, AK in the USAF.
Visitation will be from 11:30 until 1:30 pm Friday, May 21, 2021 at Blair Road United Methodist Church, 9135 Blair Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227 in the church chapel with the service at 1:30. The Rev. Tom Latimore and Lynn Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wake Forest Baptist Health, Attn: Office of Philanthropy, PO Box 571021, Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1021, or Blair Road UMC.

I’m deeply saddened by the news of one of the nicest men I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. I also had the privilege of playing softball with him at HGM. However, my best memory of Colin was when my Mom passed away he was the first to let me know I was in his thoughts and prayers. Colin is a truly great friend that will truly be missed. Prayers are with Janice, Scott, Susan, and the entire Hinson family. RIP my friend,

ZF
