William F. Howell Sr.

I knew both Bill & Martha in college and we saw them a few times after that. Two very able and admirable people!

Bill, I've been thinking of you for a couple of weeks now - I guess you were reaching out to me from the "other side". We met many years ago when you were writing your column for a local newspaper, and you included me in one of them supporting my run for City Council. Thank you! Well, you are joining some of the Encinitas Old Timers whom we have sadly lost - say hello to Ida Lou Coley for me. You've lived a full, wonderful life, and did a lot of good along the way. Bill was a true mentor to me as I worked at Howell-Kneedler insurance on second Street and then Howell, Murria and Frick in Solana Beach. My success was his success. Bill exemplified integrity and true care for his employees. I have always been grateful for the start he gave me.

I was deeply saddened to read of Mr. Howell´s passing. He was a true stalwart of the Leucadia and Encinitas communities, and of the entire San Dieguito area. I often had the pleasure of sitting in the stands with Mr. and Mrs. Howell as they devotedly cheered on their daughters´ sports teams at San Dieguito High School, and I covered the games for a local newspaper. I have fond memories of Bill working on and playing in our annual Encinitas-Del Mar Rotary Softball games and picnics at San Dieguito Park in the 1970's and 80's. His good nature and infectious smile always brought great joy to all. Great memories!
