To Bill's family: My condolences to all of you. I enjoyed reading his articles back in the day. We had many great sports columnists and Bill was definitely one of the best!

Growing up I knew Bill as a sports writer for the Plain Dealer. About 6 years ago I had the pleasure of becoming Bill and Marilyn's neighbor. My encounters and conversations with Bill generally occured outside on the sidewalk. Bill shared some amazing stories about his adventures with all the famous people he wrote about or interacted with as a sports writer. Bill and I were classmates at Vanderbilt. He was from Dallas and I was and am from Oklahoma City . Within the first 30 seconds of knowing one another he uttered " Hook-em " and I responded with a " Boomer Sooner " . Moments later we wagered a 5 spot on the 1966 OU- Texas game . We managed to stay in touch a bit after our Commodore days .
