Not sure what to say?

I knew Bill only briefly in Okinawa. He was one of the funniest people I ever knew, and the kindest and most considerate. His stories were legend. He had a marvelous take on the world, always seeing the fun in things, small or large. Every little happening was fodder for his tales and made us aware of things we wouldn't have noticed otherwise. He was devoted to his family. I happened to think of him the other day and looked him up on the internet. Now that I know he's left us, I'll be...

I knew Bill as a child, but did not know him well as he was 10 years my senior and I actually had only one most memorable encounter. My family lived 2 doors away and a boy my age who lived on the other side of the Marlands was having a dispute with me. After receiving several volleys of pears thrown at me by my buddy, I elected to return fire. All that was immediately available in front of me were some small bushes on my end of the Marland property line. After yanking a couple of these...

To Bill's Family,

I just heard about Bill's passing and my deepest sympathies go out to all of you. I worked with Bill for several years at H&R Block. He was a great guy and fun to work with. Always made the day a better one. I always enjoyed our group luncheons and when we met up yesterday he was TRULY missed. He will be missed by all from our office.

Sorry for you loss.

Sincerely,
Jay Stowe

so long pal. "The Spoon"

So long pal, you were a real hoot:

Bill and I and two other guys (Tom and Rich) were inseparable all through high school. We were the original founders and only members of "The Grand Duck Society". We all were drawn together because our guidance councilor informed us individually that we all possessed an IQ of over 130 and that great things were expected of us during our stay at Oliver High School. I think the only lasting thing they got from us were a lot of high jinx that will...

Dear Family of Bill Marland,
Bill and I were in diapers together!!!! Both of us were born and raised on the North Side of Pittsburgh. We, officially, met at while in kindergarten at Halls Grove School...
we had some wonderful fun times as we
laughed with "scotty" the school custodian. After school B & white cartoons were also a big hit as youngsters (this is before TV, of course!
Bill and John Frederick were always together....and always getting into trouple!!
I remember...

Word of his passing has just trickled back to Pittsburgh and Bill's Oliver High School classmates. I want his family and friends to know that he was not only a genius, but he was (one of a few of us who were) “Pittsburgh's Answer to SPUTNIK” and, more significantly, co-inventor of the infamous “Automatic Fuse Blower“. In 1957, Russia seemed to be getting ahead in the space race and in science education in general, so the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) launched a pilot program, a course...

Our deepest sympathy to you and your family Pat. We will keep you all in our prayers.

Pat: Please accept our deepest sympathy on Bill's passing. He was one of the "good guys" when we arrived at Shaw in the spring of 1968. We will never forget that Sunday afternoon we visited you and your girls and Bill and I overdosed on over-spicey wild pig ribs and martinis to the extent we both went to work the next day with puffy red lips from the BBQ sauce. We were later that evening inaugurated into the game of "Nerts" by you guys. Judy and I still talk about that day every now and...

In many conversations with Bill over many years, I never had one that did not add something good to my day. I've long been glad to know him and, now that he's gone, I realize what a true privilege it was just to share an office with him.

My deepest sympathy to his family, who know far better than I what a loss his death represents.
