William Meyer Obituary

William P. (Bill) Meyer William P. (Bill) Meyer has died at 101 years of age on November 24, 2007. He was born August 25, 1906, in Steger, Illinois, and grew up in and around Lexington, Nebraska. He married Leona Winstead, moved to Wichita, Kansas, and there he raised his family. Bill was respected as a freight agent for two truck lines, retiring in his 70s. He was active in his several churches, serving as elder and church officer at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita, as well as chairman of the school board for Wichita Lutheran Schools. He had a beautiful bass voice, and sang in the church choir for many years. He enjoyed singing "Messiah" with the Wichita Choral Society. One of his proudest moments was when he was asked to sing with the Lindsborg (Kansas) Choral Society for a visit from King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden. In his 95th year, he startled the assembled mourners when he stood and sang "The Lord's Prayer", at his wife's funeral. He resided at Trinity Care Center for the last five years, spending much of his time there in service to the staff and residents. He was an unofficial greeter at the front parlor, and served coffee to residents in the dining room. He was rewarded with the honor of being named Resident Volunteer of the Year for 2005. Bill leaves three sisters, Louise Seim of Portland, Oregon and her husband Alton, Ruth Seim of Hemet, California, and Selma Harris of Salt Lake City, Utah; also two daughters, Virginia Wulf and her husband Carl, of Lenexa, Kansas, and Carolyn Sullivan and her husband Larry of Austin, Texas. He leaves five grandchildren: David Wulf and Ginger of Wichita, Kansas, Dennis Wulf and Joanna, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rebecca Painter and Winston, of Overland Park, Kansas, Pixie Sherry and Dan of Austin, Texas, and Gina Day and Dan of Kyle, Texas. He was proud of his six great-grandchildren: Courtney Hoffman, Allison and Kristin Wulf: Taylor Sherry, and Nora and Thomas Day. He had one great-great-granddaughter, Jordyn Hoffman. Many of his 26 nieces and nephews honored him with a celebration of his centennial year in 2006. Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Leona, and his grandson Doug. Services will be held Friday, November 30, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1513 E. Yager Lane, in Austin.. http://www.mem.com

I had the honor to meet Mr. Meyer when both he and my father were residents of Trinity Care Center. I continued to visit him after my father passed away. Mr. Meyer was a wonderful man. He told great stories and spoke with love about his wife and family. May he rest in peace with God.
