William 'Bill' Roy Meyers, 93, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 in Mesa. Bill was born in Superior, Wis. He received his Bachelor's degree in 1938 from UWS-Superior. During college he was active in sports and in 1976 the football teams that Bill participated in were inducted into UWS' Hall of Fame. Bill had a railroad career spanning 45 years beginning as a switchman. He was elected General Chairman of the Switchmen's Union and in the '50s was elected Executive Vice President of the Switchmen's Union of North America. When five railroad unions merged, he served as Assistant President in the United Transportation Union. Upon retirement in 1980, Bill and his wife moved to Mesa, Ariz., where Bill was active in the community. The Governor of Arizona appointed him to the State Water Quality Board. Bill served as District Director of Tax-Aid, a tax assistance program in Mesa. Bill was a founding member and first president of the Union Club of East Central Arizona. He served as president of a local AARP chapter for over 15 years. He started and served as president of Fountain of the Sun's Community Lending Closet that loaned medical equipment to residents. Bill directed a men's physical fitness group in Fountain of the Sun. Bill received special recognition for his volunteer efforts by the city of Mesa. He was a long time usher at Holy Cross Catholic Church and member of Knights of Columbus. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Jean Mary, his wife of 62 years preceded him in death. Bill is survived by his son, Robert (Katy); son, Bill (Sandy); daughter, Nancy; and five grandchildren and other relatives and friends. VISITATION:12 noon Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church and continue until the 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial with Rev. Fr. Daniel Dahlberg as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.Downs-LeSage Funeral Home, 1304 Hammond Avenue, Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bill was one of the nicest men to work with. He and and his Jean
were great friends of the newly formed UTU. We had great fun and fond memories bowling with Bill and Jean every Thursday night. They were a great team. Our friendship lasted even after his retirement. We sincerely wish his family our deepest sympathy.
