William J. Mydlowec

William Joseph Mydlowec passed away unexpectedly Friday, November 20, 2020 at his residence in San Francisco, CA. He was 44 years old. Born in Philadelphia, PA, Bill grew up in Feasterville, PA. He was the son of Wasil (Bill) and Sally (Kuzma) Mydlowec. Bill was a 1994 graduate of La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, PA. He excelled in academics, was a member of the National Honor Society, earned AP Scholar rank and was named a National Merit Scholar Finalist. While at La Salle, Bill participated in Mathletes, Forensics, Intramurals, was president of the Science club, Data Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the "Blue and Gold" Yearbook. Bill attended Stanford University, School of Engineering in Palo Alto, CA graduating in 1998, earning a degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. For three years, he was a resident hall technology assistant. While at Stanford, Bill obtained a co-op at Apple Computer, working in research and development of the first Wi Fi system. While an undergrad, Bill began taking graduate courses at the Stanford University School of Business. He was the technical lead, working on a research grant from Motorola Corporation, with MBA students, who were responsible to develop a business model for Motorola. Starting his professional career, Bill was in research focusing on Genetic Programming under the leadership of Stanford professor, John Koza, Ph.D. Bill had 33 conference papers published/co-published and 18 patents issued/co-issued or pending. Bill was a co-author of chapters in 5 books published on Genetic Programming. He was founder and CEO of Pharmix, a startup company involved in drug discovery using machine learning. His next venture was as co-founder and CEO of Discovery Engine, a company whose focus was a search engine based on AI and Machine Learning technologies. Bill was an AI Expert witness and consultant to Area 1 Securities, and other technology companies nationally, with a focus on AI applications. His last position was Chief Technology Scientist at HealthTap, a company chartered to develop TeleMedicine systems. Bill was responsible for management of all research utilizing Machine Learning and Augmented Intelligence technologies. Bill had a love of learning and was an avid reader. He had a strong work ethic. Although his life's focus and achievements were in the computer world, he had a sense of balance in life. He was an articulate communicator who enjoyed interesting discussions with people. Bill had a great sense of humor and wit. He enjoyed watching SF Giants baseball games, movies, documentaries, collecting original video games and systems, programming robots, and visits to the SF MOMA. His generous spirit even made time to mentor the next generation of computer scientists. Bill, with his intelligent mind, creative ideas, sociable personality and concern for others will be deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues. In addition to his parents, Bill is survived by his aunts Maria (Mydlowec) Illgas, Susan (Kuzma) Finley and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joseph A. and Pearl (Gosciniak) Kuzma of Philadelphia, PA and his paternal grandparents, John and Teodozia (Samolynk) Mydlowec of Philadelphia, PA. Family and friends are invited to attend Bill's Gathering at 10:30-11:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM on Saturday, December 12, to be held at St. Bede the Venerable Church, 1071 Holland Rd., Southampton, PA 18966. Internment will be held at the Columbarium of Our Lady of Czestochowa Cemetery, 654 Ferry Road, Doylestown, PA 18901.
