William "Bill" Kearney Powers, 86, of Brick, died peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Philadelphia, after a long battle with pulmonary issues. Bill was surrounded by his loving family. He was born in New York City, raised in Verona and resided in Brick for the past 47 years. Before finishing high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Second World War. He was stationed in the Philippines, where he earned a Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. After serving in the Navy, Bill attended Seton Hall University. He worked primarily in sales and the construction industry. His last employer was East Coast Acoustics. He enjoyed his retirement immensely traveling the world with his family and wife Mary.
Bill was a pillar in our community. He was instrumental in organizing Brick's youth sports programs such as the Junior Sports League, Little League and Brick Recreation Soccer. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and VFW, both of Brick.
Bill was married for 53 years to his wife, Mary, who predeceased him in 2012. He is survived by his 5 children and their spouses, William K. Powers Jr. and his wife Colleen of Jupiter, FL, Terry Lynn Beck and her husband Robert of Brick, Jim Powers and his wife Nancy of Yardley, PA, Timothy Powers and his wife Pam of Spotsylvania, VA and Michael Powers and his wife Suzie of Bayville; 2 brothers, Joseph Powers and his wife Maudie of FL and Edmund Powers and his wife Jean of NJ; 1 sister-in-law, Joan Lytle and "best friend", Dave Lytle of Brick. Bill also leaves behind his 18 grandchildren who adored him. William III, Ryan and Lindsey Powers, Nicole, Rob, Kyle, Kelsi, Tyler, Sean and Brianna Beck, Brian, Lauren and Katie Powers, Shane, Caitlyn and Kevin Powers and Kerston and Kassie Powers and many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8 at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 State Highway 88, Brick. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 at St. Dominic Church in Brick, where Bill has been a member since 1966. Interment to follow at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery in Wrightstown, where he will be buried with Military Honors. In "lieu of flowers", gifts can be made to support the Melanoma Program at Penn's Abramson Cancer Center sent to Penn Medicine Development, 3535 Market St., Suite 750, Philadelphia PA 19109. Although Bill died of natural causes, melanoma took his beloved wife early last year. He will live on in our hearts forever.
