Colonial Funeral Homes - Brick Obituary

Colonial Funeral Home,2170 Hwy.88, Brick, NJ

William Conrad Readel, Jr., age 87 of Brick, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2020.  He was born in Medford, Massachusetts and moved with his family to New Jersey in 1936.  He graduated from Nutley High School in 1950 and from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology.  Upon graduation, he served two years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Bad Kreuznach, Germany.  After receiving a master’s degree in Social Work in 1965 from Rutgers University, he began employment with the Division of Youth and Family Services, retiring in 1994 as the Regional Administrator for the Southern Region of N.J.  Bill moved to Brick Township in 1963 where he and his wife raised their two children.  He was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan and served as an Elder.  In the community, Bill served as scout leader, Brick Memorial Band Booster member and president and was a member and president for the Brick Board of Education from 1984-1990.  After he retired, he served on the boards of both St. Thomas School, Brick and Robins Nest.  He has been a mason with the Essex Lodge for 63 years.

Bill will be remembered by many as a kind and thoughtful friend whose loving smile brought a sense of kindness to everyone around him.  He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and enjoyed vegetable gardening, reading, history and nature.  Most of all he relished being a grandfather and loved attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.

Bill was predeceased by his parents William and Miriam Readel and his sister Janet Viles; brothers-in-law Salvatore Asaro and William Viles; and his sister-in-law Anne Asaro.  He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rose Marie (nee Asaro) of Brick; his son Roger and his wife Carol of Waretown; and daughter Karyn and her husband David of Brick; grandson’s Kyle and Dylan Readel; granddaughter’s Samantha and Lindsay Nelson; as well as many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews, and friends.

William is being laid to rest at The Ocean County Memorial Park in Silverton.  Condolences may be shared with the family on colonialfuneralgroup.com.  A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will take place at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to The Popcorn Park Zoo at ahscares.org in memory of William C. Readel, Jr.

Not sure what to say?

I worked for DYFS and knew Bill as Regional Administrator of Central and Southern Regions, although I never reported to him. He was always cooperative and responsive. He once found where I worked in Central Office and called to thank me for taking care of a problem that a foster parent had. The foster parent must have reported to him that I had resolved the problem. I hardly recall another instance of someone that I did not work for calling to thank me for doing a good job. I appreciate...

My love, thoughts and prayers to Karyn, Mrs. Readel, Roger, David, Carol and all the grandchildren. Mr. Readel will always hold a very special place in my heart. Such wonderful childhood memories I have and will hold forever of the times spent at Karyn's house. I was always welcomed with opened arms and still hear his cheerful voice saying my name. God Bless you Mr. Readel, you were a wonderful, caring and loving human being. xo

It is with great sadness that I read of Bill's passing. He was a good friend and fellow BOE member and running mate. Natalie and I offer our sincere condolences to Rosemarie and the entire Readel family. May he rest in peace.

What a great life. Great Memories as a child with Roger & Mr. Readel in Indian Guides. Rest easy Mr. Readel. You lived a great long life. Condolences to Roger and the rest of the family.
Regards,
Scott Figaro

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Bill was a Godly man of integrity. He will be truly missed. May the Holy Spirit comfort all who mourn during this difficult time.

Uncle Billy was one of the kindest men I have ever known. He was a man of intelligence and integrity who was always ready to help others. A role model for many to follow. I will miss him.

Rose Marie and Karyn and family, very sorry for your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

To this day, I cherish my childhood memories of growing up in Bricktown and being close friends with Roger (and we still talk about it often) and Mr. Readel was a man that sticks out in my mind as a great person, dad, family man and neighbor. I was lucky to know him.
All my love to the entire Readel family during this difficult time.

My Grandpa was such a kind, amazing, and wonderful person. He will be missed so dearly by everyone who's lives he touched. I am going to miss having conversations with him about history and nature, and I will also miss his storytelling. I will miss everything about my Grandfather.
