William H. Billy Ryan obituary, 1943-2023, New Orleans, LA

William Ryan Obituary

William H. Ryan, affectionately known as Billy, passed away peacefully at his home on March 11, 2023 at the age of 80. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, real estate broker and devoted Catholic. Billy was born on January 31, 1943 to the late Edward "Ed" Sr. and Edna Ryan and raised in New Orleans. Some of his fondest childhood memories included running around Lakeview and playing with his childhood friends, many of whom remained lifelong friends. He graduated from St. Aloysius High School in 1961 and attended Loyola University. He began his professional career as a machinist working for NASA Michoud Assembly Facility. Later, he developed a love and interest for real estate by working as an agent, and soon after went on to earn his broker license. In 1983, Billy founded Esquire Realty, which he proudly owned and operated for 40 years. He was known for his expertise, professionalism, and dedication. Billy's hard work and commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and clients. Above all else, Billy was a man of deep faith who loved God and lived his life according to Catholic values. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Clement of Rome and often volunteered his time and resources to help those in need. His faith was an integral part of his life and he found comfort and strength in the words of St. Padre Pio, "Pray, hope and don't worry". Billy was a loving husband, doting dad and grandfather, "Poppa". He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, eating good food, and sharing memorable stories. He had an admirable personality and a great sense of humor. He could always bring joy and laughter into any conversation. He never met a stranger and made sure everyone felt like family. Billy will be remembered as a kind, loving and generous man who lived a devoted life to Christ and made a lasting impact on everyone he met. The loss of Billy will be deeply felt by his wife of 21 years Valerie, children Candace Owens, Dominique Olivier (Ryan), Jarrod Rotolo (Suzanne) and Sean Rotolo, grandchildren Isabelle, Reagan, Broc, Olivia, Jolie, Brie and Charlotte, his nephew Stephen Ryan, niece Nicole Major (Sean) and many other family members and loyal friends. He is preceded in death by his first wife Laura Cobb Ryan, parents Edward "Ed" Sr. and Edna Lynch Ryan, brother Edward "Eddie" Ryan Jr. and grandson Victor van Leusden. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral mass at 12:00 PM at St. Clement of Rome Church, 4317 Richland Avenue, Metairie, LA 70002 on Monday, March 20, 2023. Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM, followed by an interment at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Notre Dame Seminary in Billy's memory. If you've noticed that the world is a little less brilliant, it's because we lost an incredible man. He will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Billy was a great cousin to my father, Donald Daly. I have fond memories of growing up in the presence of his witty demeanor. I enjoyed a telephone conversation with him a few months ago and offer condolences on this loss to his immediate family.

My prayers, thoughts, and condolences are with all family and friends of Mr. Billy. Although I vaguely remember him as a child of 5 years old, he and my father were real estate partners and very close friends. I can still remember interacting with he and my father in the office building on Veterans Blvd. May you rest in peace, Mr. Billy. Love, Nancy Kinsley, Jr. Gauthier.

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry I am not able to attend Billys funeral. I cannot express how much of my life has been attached to Billy.

My first recollection is sitting in the back seat driving with his Mom and Dad. We looked at one another and started giggling. We never needed jokes to laugh at one another but we grew to enjoy jokes on top of jokes, all from Billy to me. It seems much of our life was inseparable no matter where I lived.

Billy was the neighborhood leader who grew to be a manhood leader. His talent was immeasurable whenever he took on a challenge. When we went out for NORD baseball, he was the catcher and hitter. He got bored and took over as pitcher - and hitter. When in St. Aloysius High School the football coach pulled him on to the field. His brother was recently graduated and all state wide receiver. Coach knew he was a shoe in for the team. After a couple of weeks, Billy walks into the coaches office to tell him he did not like playing (practicing). The coach was beside himself. Right then and there you had to know he was not doing anything he did not want to do.

I have never known anyone with a larger personality. When he finished St. Aloysius, he took a menial job at Lakeside Rambler and helped out around the shop. Shortly thereafter he left to be a mechanic at NASA´s Michoud Plant in New Orleans East. Inside of about a year he was either VP or President of the labor union there. He was 20 years old.

From there he grew all on his own. I tried so hard to influence him but he was his own man and did what he felt best. He was so full of personality and love that he was an undeniable force. Bill Ryan was my best friend no matter where I lived. From the back seat of that car to under the street light in the front of our houses. We were up to 12 midnight, and later, for years. We were always "hanging out", riding up and down Canal Blvd looking for races and drinking beer, till now. And there upon my move to Houston, TX, NYC, Boston, MA and then Florida. He has been such an influence, such a companion, no matter the miles; and such a close friend.

He will be especially missed by me.

Val and family,
I know there are no words that can ease your pain. Rob, Tiger and myself are sending all of you love and strenth. Billy is one of the greatest humans I have ever known and was a second father to me. His soul lit up the world and all those who knew and loved him are better people for it. He will be so missed.
