My heartfelt condolences to William Serrin's family and friends. I am an artist from Pittsburgh who specializes in paintings based on the industrial history of my area. Upon reading his book, Homestead..., I was inspired to do my oil painting, "Quittin' Time!" which depicts men leaving the mill, circa 1950s. I remember Professor Serrin fondly, and feel I owe him so much. He was the one who really taught me how to be a good reporter. He was my academic advisor on my final semester independent project, in which I was spending time on the streets with runaways. I remember we would have meetings in his office to discuss how the research was going, and how I was going to get these kids who distrusted the world, to accept me and open up to me. An early whisper from Mr. Serrin

When I watched The Post just 11 days before Professor Serrin's passing, I couldn't help but so fondly remember him and his always intense morning classes History of the News at NYU in the mid 90s.
I was taking 15 credits back then for my Masters degree in Broadcasting Journalism and truly overwhelmed with classes, trying not to quit working from ESPN International where I was anchoring SportsCenter in Portuguese to Brazil from Bristol, CT.
