William K. Sherwin, MD, PhD, 75, of Wynnewood, prominent physician and dermatologist, died peacefully at home on July 19, 2023.
Dr. Sherwin graduated from St Joseph’s Prep in 1965 and earned his bachelor’s degree in Physics from St. Joseph’s College in 1969. He earned his Medical Doctorate and PhD in Immunology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1975.
Dr. Sherwin was the first student to be accepted into the combined MD, PhD program at Penn. He conducted his immunology doctorate research in the lab of the eminent scientist Peter C. Nowell, MD, who became a lifelong mentor and friend to Dr. Sherwin.
He completed his internship at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood.
Returning to Penn for his dermatology residency, he met Herbert Goldschmidt, MD and was subsequently invited to join his private practice in Bala Cynwyd where he practiced medicine for more than 40 years. A lifelong Hawk, Dr. Sherwin provided care for many of his high school and college classmates as well as the Jesuit priests who taught him.
Through his tireless dedication to his patients and pursuit of excellence, he left an indelible mark on the world. Dr. Sherwin’s commitment to nurturing the potential of his employees and supporting their career advancement is a cornerstone of his legacy. Members of his staff have progressed to various careers in the medical field, including a dermatologist, a resident in transplant surgery, and several physician assistants and registered nurses. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the medical community.
Dr. Sherwin was a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology, the Pennsylvania Academy of Dermatology (Past President), the Pennsylvania Medical Society and Montgomery County Medical Society, the Philadelphia Dermatological Society, and the Royal Society of Medicine. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
Dr. Sherwin was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. His home was the busy and warm setting for countless family gatherings.
His interests were many and extensive. A voracious reader and lover of music of all genres, he also had a passion for art particularly focused on Old Master prints and drawings.
Dr. Sherwin was generous with his time and talents. He enthusiastically captured memories of sports and theater events when his son, Chris, was a student at The Episcopal Academy. His photographs were legendary and he excelled in sports action shots, giving photos to each teammate, and even opposing players, that remain cherished by families today.
At the Prep, Dr. Sherwin was a top sprinter in the Catholic League. He was a lifelong Phillies fan, a passion he shared with his son. As an adult he took up and excelled at tennis.
Dr. Sherwin belonged to The Merion Cricket Club, The Courts, The Cynwyd Club and the Penn Club of NYC.
Dr. Sherwin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Theresa Yoshida Sherwin, his son Christopher, daughter-in-law Elyse and granddaughter Emilia, his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, 11 nieces and nephews and 16 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anne Sherwin of Avalon, NJ and a sister-in-law.
Relatives and friends are invited on Friday August 18th, Visitation from 9:00 to 9:45 AM and Memorial Service at 10:00 AM at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 226 Righters Mill Rd., Gladwyne PA.
